Facts About Burglars that You Need to Know

Do you want to know how you can protect your home from burglars? If you do, the first thing that you should do is to get to know the burglars better—how they think and act. To help you out, we have provided some facts about burglars that you should know about below:
1) How they look
You may think that burglars will always be dressed in an all-black outfit and they would be typically carrying grappling hooks, glass cutters, and other invasive devices. Well, you are wrong. It will be difficult for you to spot a burglar right away because they will be dressed in comfortable clothes and would pretend to be either as a delivery man or a workman.
2) How old are they
For your information, burglars are not usually teenagers. In fact, according to the US Census, about ¾ of a break in cases are committed by adults. In addition to that, majority of the burglars that have been caught have high school diploma while 1/3 of them have a GED and about 2.5% of them have college degrees.
3) What is their gender
Whether they are adults or teenagers, majority of the burglars are male. In fact, 84% of the captured burglars are men. According to the FBI, about two-thirds of the burglaries were done by a white person.
4) What they do when they get caught
Once they get caught, you might think that they will never do the crime again but truth is, many burglars even try to steal from the same house again. In fact, 82% of burglars are arrested again by the police within 5 years of their release.
5) Time of the day when they commit the crime
We may think that burglaries are committed during nighttime but the truth is, burglars are more likely to break into your home during the day, between 9:00 am and 3:00pm when they think that nobody’s at home.
6) What they know
Do you think your spare keys are safe from burglars? No. Truth is, these people know where are the usual spots where you hide your spare keys—under the potted plant or a fake rock or at the top of your doorstep frame.
7) What they expect
One thing you should know is that burglars are not usually armed. The main reason why they break into homes during the day when no one is at home is because they are not looking for a fight. They just want to get your things and leave.
8) Their favorite months
According to statistics, the highest number of burglary cases usually occur in July while the lowest number of cases are recorded in February.
9) How they enter the homes
About 60% of burglars employ forcible entry to get inside the home while 30% would rather enter the home through an unlocked door or an open window.
10) What they look for in their target
According to 90% of the convicted burglars, they would avoid homes that have home security systems. If ever they entered a house and the alarm goes off, they would abandon the plan. Because of this, it is estimated that houses with no alarm system are three times more likely to be burglarized than those houses with a home security system.
